Born into a large Griot family of Sabar drummers and praise singers Amadou has been surrounded by the traditional Griot music and folk lore of west Africa from birth.
The Griot are the hereditary keepers of oral tradition passing musicianship and songs from one generation of the family to the next.
This beginning was further enhanced by a full time position as a member of the Senegal national band for seven years, during which time he had the opportunity to play percussion for some great musicians including Cesaria Evora, Youssou N'Dour and Jimmy Cliff.
Amadou writes and sings primarily in Wolof which is the most widely spoken language in Senegal. His song writing is based firmly in Senegalese griot tradition yet with a modern outlook and the influences of other styles he has incorporated into his own personal sound. Amadou posseses a dynamic Voice that is soft and warm yet powerful with great vocal range and dexterity. To accompany his singing Amadou has developed a personal guitar style which is strongly influenced by the Kora ( west African Harp) and the Xalam, both traditional instruments often played by the West African Griot musicians. His unique finger picking style is enhanced by percussive slapping of the strings and drumming on the guitar body using his skills as a percussionist to explore and improvise as he plays.
